The greatgranddaughter of Jewish refugees to Britain at the turn of the 20th century, anne blonstein was born and raised in the Home Counties — first Hertfordshire, then moving with her family to Surrey when she was 11. Before leaving Britain in 1986, she spent six years in Cambridge, where she took a degree in Natural Sciences followed by a PhD in genetics and plant breeding. She is the author of several full-length collections ("the blue pearl", Salt, 2003; "worked on screen", Poetry Salzburg, 2005), ("the butterflies and the burnings", dusie press, 2007; "memory's morning", Shearsman Books, 2008). A fourth chapbook, "hairpin loop", (Bright Hill Press) and her latest collection published, "to be continued" (Shearman Books, 2011).

We are especially interested in critical appreciations and analyses (in any style or format) of passages from Leslie Scalapino's work. Her poetry has been published in a variety of publications, including the anthologies Verses that Hurt: Pleasure and Pain From the Poemfone Poets (St. Martin's Press) and The Boog Reader (Boog Lit) and has been translated into Ukrainian, Hungarian, Arabic, Bangla and Galician. She has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Meet the Composer/International Creative Collaborations Program, Agni Journal, the National Theater Translation Fund, and the New York State Council on the Arts. As a founding member of Yara Arts Group she has collaborated on numerous theatrical productions presented in Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Siberia, as well as in New York City at La MaMa, E.T.C. She’s also curated several reading and performance series at the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church as well as other NYC venues and written about the arts for Time Out New York, Paper Magazine, and About.com.

Karen Hannah is originally from Santa Maria, California. She has lived in Philadelphia, where she received her MA in Creative Writing and Literature from Temple University, and has recently returned from Seoul, South Korea, where she worked as an editor for nearly three years, making curricula books and working on a manuscript entitled when you and I are understood. She's now happily residing back in the land of San Francisco, after having sadly left it seven years ago. She is excited to begin taking letterpress classes for a documentary she wants to make on existing letterpresses in the United States, and to brave biking up as many hills as possible. Why Weren’t Any Women Invited To Publishers Weekly’s Weenie Roast?

Publishers Weekly recently announced their Best Books Of 2009 list.
Of their top ten, chosen by editorial staff, no books written by women
were included. Quoted in The Huffington Post, PW confidently admitted
that they're “not the most politically correct" choices. This
statement comes in a year in which new books appeared by writers such
as Lorrie Moore, Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Mavis Gallant, Rita
Dove, Heather McHugh and Alicia Ostriker.

“The absence made me nearly speechless.” said writer Cate Marvin,
cofounder of the newly launched national literary organization WILLA
(Women In Letters And Literary Arts), which, since August, has
attracted close to 5400 members on their Facebook web page, including
many major and emerging women writers. “It continues to surprise me
that literary editors are so comfortable with their bias toward male
writing, despite the great and obvious contributions that women
authors make to our contemporary literary culture.”

WILLA’s other cofounder, Erin Belieu, Director Of The Creative Writing
Program at Florida State University, asked, “So is the flipside here
that including women authors on the list would just have been an
empty, politically correct gesture? When PW’s editors tell us they’re
not worried about ‘political correctness,’ that’s code for ‘your
concerns as a feminist aren’t legitimate.’ They know they’re being
blatantly sexist, but it looks like they feel good about that. I, on
the other hand, have heard from a whole lot of people—writers and
readers--who don’t feel good about it at all.”

PW also did a Top 100 list and, of the authors included, only 29 were
women. The WILLA Advisory Board is in the process of putting together
a list titled “Great Books Published By Women In 2009.” This will be
posted to the organization’s Facebook page and website. A WILLA Wiki
has also been started for people to share their nominations for Great
Books By Women in 2009. Press release to follow.

WILLA was founded to bring increased attention to women’s literary
accomplishments and to question the American literary establishment’s
historical slow-footedness in recognizing and rewarding women writer’s
achievements. WILLA is about to launch their website and is in the
process of planning their first national conference to be held next
year.

The wee books strike again. This is a tiny set of 3 books of modern English poetry by living poets. Each page is roughly 2"/2". Books come wrapped together in a handmade envelope of upcycled materials (generally old book pages) in the set of 3 and numbered (this is a numbered edition of 33. Each book is made individually, so all are unique and no two look exactly the same, esp those with the various papers used.

I often have reoccurring dreams...not really ever quite the same dream, but the same scenario or physical place, the same strange need. It happened again early this morning, to which I awoke in a sweat. The dream entailed finding the room in my parents house which doesn't really exist, but in many dreams I have found the secret door or switch which leads the way. In this particular dream it was after I had been in the cottage attached to my parents house (which I have dreamt of before but also does not exist). There my cousin (who kept changing between two cousins, was being confrontational about how disorderly the cottage and house were (although that would never be the case in my mother's house) And my cousins would never get so upset over such trivial things anyway. I found myself in the house of my parents later, the old farm house which once had many rooms which my grandfather knocked the walls down of many after first buying the house in the 60's. They also had another house on the same property, and finally bought the house from the owner, the original cat lady, I think her name was Mrs Sherman, though not absolutely certain. Her daughter was called Isabella. So when entering the house much was amiss their. I met a friend, who was not a friend in the dream and she was drunk and weird and with an even drunker weirder guy. She wanted my scarf, which is long, thin and of a black cotton material. I did not want to give it to her. But she really wanted something of mine, and so I suggested we swap something, for which it was decided fair to swap her necklace, which had a miniature house on it and seemed valuable. Strange stuff then occurred, her freaky boyfriend frightened us. We hid from him in plain site by remaining absolutely still and not breathing. Then I proceeded to go upstairs to the set of rooms I had to crawl thru a sort of ante-chamber room to get to. Inside was my bedroom, another fictional room which I have dreamt of before, but it often varies in its state, sometimes more dilapidated than other times. Others I knew from high-school, one girl in particular whom I never really liked, or trusted showed up naked and wouldn't leave, she wanted the house necklace and I wouldn't give it to her. She balanced precariously on the windowsill, threatening that she would jump. I was so sick of her by the end I nearly let her. But instead had to restrain her from jumping. The wallpaper was peeling, at another point I was in my old neighborhood, basically salvaging furniture from the street and even took something I really didn't think was for free, a set of wind chimes, i didn't seem to care about getting caught. Also, somewhere in the dream I lost one sea-glass earring (sea-glass from Narragansett and there was some symbolic importance I forgot soon upon waking)

So, following my night with Obama, I had a dream where I got that pixie hair-cut. But it was VERY swiss, meaning it was ultra pixie short, white-blonde on the front and black underneath... don't know why I am having such strange dreams (just accidentally wrote jeans!)

So, last night I kissed Obama 12 times! Oh it twasn't kinky and weird really. it was swiss ad innocent! We kissed on the cheek twice which is common and standard fair in these parts and then of course I insisted he kiss me again and again! He seemed tired and sad.
